The 2020 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has blamed President Akufo-Addo for the collapse of the fishing industry in recent times.
Mahama while addressing fisher folks at Ayakpor in the Ada Constituency of the Greater Accra Region said that the fishing industry has collapsed because the government has monopolized the distribution of premix fuel and subsidized outboard motors for its members and supporters who function as middlemen.
“When the premix comes, they give it to their part executives and they put their profit on top and sell it to the fishermen and they share the profits among themselves. That is the problem with the NPP government and this administration. Everything is about their party, it means anybody else is not a Ghanaian. It is only they who are entitled to the opportunities that this country has to offer,” he said.
He promised to transform and depoliticize the fisheries industry as he would make the fishermen to take ownership of the premix fuel as well as the subsidized outboard motors.
Mr Mahama who was confident of coming back to power again, urged the fisher folks to massively vote for him in the December 7, 2020 elections in order to correct everything that has gone wrong within the fishing sector to create opportunity.
“They brought outboard motors, gave to their party organizers and executives. The outboard motors that are supposed to sell at 10,000, they put their profits on top and sell it to the fishermen. How can you develop a nation like this? But I know that, NDC is coming back into office and we will correct everything that has gone wrong,” he said.
