The CAF exco have confirmed the cancellation of the Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a video conference held today June 30, 2020.
36 teams were to battle for a spot in the number one women’s football competition in the continent but due to the outbreak of COVID-19, no qualifying match have been played so far couple with the fact that no host have been identified ever since Congo withdrew from hosting the tournament.
With tournament originally programmed for November this year, limited time to complete the qualifiers, get a new host plus the time for the final draw caused CAF to sacrifice this year’s edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
It should be noted that 12 teams were to participate in this year’s edition instead of the normal 8 of the past editions.
Also, the CAF women’s champions league will be launched in 2021. The format and other details will be communicated in due course.
