Awuku recounts his ‘real-size’ moment before Justice Atuguba 9 years on

Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) Sammi Awuku has recounted how he was hauled before the Supreme Court presided over by Justice William Atuguba over contemptuous comments.

The then Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)  was alleged to have described the nine-member panel as being hypocritical and discriminatory on the Peace FM programme for a decision the court arrived at during the election petition.

He was subsequently summoned and reprimanded by the judges as he stood in the dock looking very remorseful.

After several minutes, Justice William Atuguba asked if he now sees his real size sparking spontaneous laughter from both sides.

The court further considered the admission of the offence by Mr. Awuku, and his subsequent rendering of an apology and plea for mercy, in addition to pleas rendered by the lead counsel of parties in the case, both in chambers and in open court.

Mr. Awuku, on the orders of the judges, stood in open court till they came out from a prolonged meeting in chambers, considering the possible punishment to slap on the NPP Deputy Communications Director.

‘I offer my unreserved apology and withdraw unconditionally, all my choice of words, which had embarrassed your Lordships, and indeed, the court,’ Mr. Awuku remorsefully told the court.

Recounting the incident nine years on he said “ Not forgetting my own “real size” contempt wahala… 9 years on”
