Philippe Coutinho, the Barcelona midfielder, will need to wait until later in the transfer window before a return pathway to the Premier League is clear.

Coutinho, 28, is open to coming back to England two and a half years after leaving Liverpool in a record-breaking deal worth £142million in total, but his Spanish club are prepared to delay negotiating for his departure until pre-season.

Barca manager Quique Setien faces an uncertain future after losing their La Liga title to Real Madrid this season and is expected to be replaced, with a new appointment set to assess his squad before deciding on loan departures and sales.

It is understood that Ousmane Dembele’s future is the immediate priority after his disappointing season with injury. The France forward, a £135.5million arrival from Borussia Dortmund, will be allowed to leave for the right deal.
