The 2020 Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has been challenged to choose a woman as his running mate to prove that he and his party care about women more than the President, Nana Akufo-Addo.
The call on the former President was made after the NDC harshly criticised the President, Nana Akufo-Addo for making comments that they believed was derogatory about women in Ghana.
The President speaking during Women Deliver 2019 Conference in Vancouver, Canada said Ghanaian women have done little to deserve a place in national decision making due to a lack of dynamism.
“We are not seeing enough dynamism and activism on the part of those who are seeking. I am talking about dynamism where it matters…electing people to Parliament, controlling political parties because they are the instruments by which our societies make decisions.
“We are talking about decisions, not wishes and hopes, we are talking about decisions that are going to make the difference,” President Akufo-Addo said.
This statement, the NDC believed was ‘insult’ on women and as such demanded that the President apologise for that.
“Elsewhere, such comments from President Akufo-Addo could kill the spirit and soul of gender empowerment activism…however, the tsunami of voices of protestation from Ghanaian women demonstrate that we are well past being cowed into accepting such verbal abuse as women and as key players in our national development journey,” Hannah Bisiw, NDC Women’s Organiser said at a press conference.
The demand for apology did not go down well with a Facebooker, Victor Brachie who has challenged the NDC to elect a woman as their flagbearer to show that the party cares about women.
