Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng has tasked District Mining Committees to eschew partisan politics during the distribution of mining concessions in the district.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Adansi North Community Mining Programme in Obuasi on Friday, the Minister said that would help in ensuring fairness in the distribution of mining licenses.
About 5000 youth have been registered under the Community Mining Programme in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti Region.
Out of this, 2000 have been licensed and issued identification cards while the rest are going through the process.
”Through the Community Mining Programme, galamsey has been reduced to the minimum. By and large I will say that the programme has been successful. Thousands of youth are now working” he said.
According to him, the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Mining (IMCIM) is engaged in “getting the people to work, then we can deal with those who have money and are destroying our forest and farmlands.”
