Ex-Man United defender Fosu-Mensah says he supports Kotoko

Former Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah has revealed he supports Asante Kotoko.

In an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, the Netherlands international was asked to choose between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak.

He said: “I support Asante Kotoko even though I haven’t followed Ghana football that much.”

“Asante Kotoko is a tradition for the family. Hopefully, I will now follow some games in the Ghana Premier League.”

The 23-year-old who has Ghanaian roots because of his parents also opened up about his departure from Manchester United.

He parted ways with the club after seven years, having joined them aged 16.

Fosu-Mensah signed a three-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen in January.

United did not disclose the transfer fee, but British media reported that the German club paid around £1.5 million for the right-back.

And according to him, although he loves Manchester United, lack of playing time under Ole Gunnar Solskjær forced him to leave.

“Playing for Manchester United is really a blessing. Playing in the Premier League is not easy because any team can be beaten,” he said.

“For me, it was important to play every game but I was not getting that at Manchester United that was why I left. It was not really an easy decision for me.”

When he arrived at Leverkusen, Fosu-Mensah earned the trust of manager Gerardo Seoane who gave him regular playing time.

But unfortunately, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in mid-February which saw him miss the rest of the season.

“With Bayer Leverkusen, we had to take it step by step and qualify for the champions league which is important for us,” he said.

Fosu-Mensah has been spending his summer holidays in Ghana after missing out on Netherlands’ Euro 2020 squad.

Thus far, the reception has been warm and he is having a wonderful time, just like England international of Ghanaian descent Callum Hudson-Odoi.
