The government spent $4.5 million on the senior national team, Black Stars, at the just-ended Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Egypt, Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah has said.

The team which was tipped as pre-tournament favourite suffered a round 16th exit following a 4-5 penalty defeat to Tunisia.

Prior to the departure of the team, there were calls for their budget to be made public but that was not done prompting Members of Parliament to demand a briefing.

In a statement on the floor of the House on Wednesday, 24 July 2019, Mr Asiamah said out of an amount of $6.3 million earmarked for the team’s campaign, an amount of $4.5 million was spent saving the tax payer a sum of $1.7 million.

Meanwhile, the winner of the competition, Algeria walked away with the trophy and a sum of $4.5 million as prize money.

The silver medalist, Senegal, walked away with $2.5 million, semi-finalist $2 million and quarter finalists $1 million.
