Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, has won the presidential election for the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Ghana.
His victory follows weeks of intense campaigning marked by disqualifications, legal challenges, and various hurdles. The ‘Lapaz Toyota’ hitmaker and his running mate, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, secured 50.7% of the votes, totaling 9,455 votes.
The elections recorded a voter turnout of 18,659. Just last week, the school’s Appeals Board unanimously overturned his disqualification, which was based on claims that he was a non-resident student. The SRC had argued that Guru and another candidate did not meet the qualifications to run for the position.
After a legal battle, the judicial board confirmed that the grounds for disqualification were valid, initially preventing the musician from contesting in the election.
