Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has revealed what he says is the real reason behind the conversion of one of the two all-male halls at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) into a mixed gender facility.
The maverick politician who was speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Monday which was monitored by GhanaNewsPage.Com said the decision to convert the vibrant University Hall, also known as Katanga to a mixed one is a ‘political one’.
According to him, the hall was converted as part of the punishment to students of the hall for entertaining New Patriotic Party (NPP) then Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 elections.
“People have no idea how the Vice Chancellor did when Akufo-Addo went to Tech. It was the Katanga guys who came to whisk Akufo-Addo away because the VC tried to stop him…,” he said.
The University was thrown into a state of anarchy on Monday as some aggrieved students hit the streets to protest against what they said were series of brutalities meted out to them by the KNUST security.
The latest incident was sparked by an alleged assault and subsequent arrest of some eleven (11) students of the University last Friday (October 19, 2018).
What was supposed to have been a peaceful demonstration turned violent as the teeming protestors decided to destroy everything in sight, burning vehicles and smashing windscreens, as well as louvres, billboards and other property belonging to the University?
This was after they had mounted roadblocks on all the principal streets amid chants and other aggressive behaviours.
The conversion of the halls into mixed gender facility has been cited as one of the reasons for the violent clashes in the school.
