Chelsea legend Michael Essien is on the verge of completing a shock move to Thai powerhouse Muangthong United, reports indicate.
Essien, 33 is reported to have reached an agreement with the Thai team after his move to Australian side Melbourne Victory fell through two months ago.
The Ghana international is on the brink of joining the side with just personal terms to be agreed, with both parties likely to sign the dotted lines before Thursday.
The midfielder has been without a club throughout the summer after leaving Greek side Panathinaikos.
If he does complete his move, he will undoubtedly become one of the biggest names ever to play in Thailand.
Essien, nicknamed the ‘Bison’ for his physical presence on the pitch, was one of Roman Abramovich’s most successful signings at Stamford Bridge.
Muangthong United have won the Thai League six times and the potential capture of the former AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder will help shore its brand in the Asian region.
