Former Local Government Minister, Prof Kwamena Ahwoi has revealed that late President, John Evans Atta Mills was in a way happy and thanked God after losing the 2000 elections.
In his book, ‘Working with Rawlings’, Prof Ahwoi said the late President was happy despite losing the polls because he never believed he could have been an effective leader.
This, he said was because late President Mills never believed former President Rawlings would have allowed him to rule the country in peace.
“My brothers, God made me lose the 2000 presidential election. The way Jerry is behaving towards me, I don’t think I could have been an effective President if I had won in 2000…” he quotes late President Mills as saying to him and two others.
Prof Mills, he added, was not enthused about becoming the head of state at the time because he believed ‘Rawlings would have ruled from behind’.
He further wrote in the book that late President Mills in his own Christian way thought God made him the 2000 elections.
To late President’s Mills, he never knew how he was going to stand up to President Rawlings without being tagged as an ‘ingrate’.
“President Kufour’s eight-year interregnum created the necessary space to enable me, when I became President in 2009 to stand up to Rawlings’.
Prof Ahwoi wrote that late President Mills believed 2009 was the appropriate time for him to become Ghana’s leader.
“…He was elated to have been elected President but it was his own way of telling us that 2009 was a more propitious time for him to have assumed the presidency than 2001.”
