An aspiring Parliamentary candidate of the New Party (NPP) in the Akwatia Constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to revise their notes on nepotism in the country.
The NDC at a press conference accused the Nana Akufo-Addo administration of being nepotistic as according to them, the President has appointed numerous family and friends to occupy ‘juicy’ positions in government.
“…Among Akufo-Addo’s uncountable relatives in government is Nana Asante Bediatuo, his cousin, from Kyebi who serves as his Executive Secretary. Bediatuo is not alone! He is joined in government by his father, Kofi Darko Asante, who chairs the Governing Council of GIMPA, his mother, Mrs Vida Asante, who is the head of the Presidential Household and his brother, Kwesi Kuntu Asante, who sits on the Board of Ghana Hostels. In addition, Nana Asante Bediatuo’s sister, Lauretta Asante (marital name, Otchere), is one of the three Deputy Directors-General at SSNIT who have been appointed by this government.
“Other relatives of President Akufo-Addo who currently occupy various positions in his government include, Ken Ofori-Atta, Minister of Finance; Samuel Atta Akyea, Works and Housing Minister; and Kwesi Amoako Atta, Minister of Roads and Highways, all of whom are cousins of the President, portion of the statement further read.
Commenting on this on Accra-based Happy FM as monitored by GhanaNewsPage.Com, Ernest Yaw Kumi said almost all of the 51 appointees named in the press conference are more ‘qualified and competent at their posts than the NDC is portraying’.
“NDC should name any of the 51 appointees who is incompetent and unfit for the positions he or she occupies. In fact, I can state that most of these appointees are more competent than any of the NDC executives including Sammy Gyamfi who held the press conference…,” he said.
According to Ernest Kumi, the NDC resorted to the family and friends government debate as a means of diverting attention from discussions on their inability to produce a manifesto for 2020 elections.
“The truth and absolute truth is that we need a better alternative because NDC in opposition has never presented any policy alternative better than what NPP is delivering…NDC is bankrupt of ideas and doesn’t have any useful policy alternative…,” he said.
