Left handers are people who practically does almost everything with their left hands but have the right side of the brain more activated.
In human biology, left handed men are more likely to express a strongly dominant left hand than women.
A research made by Halpern and Coren says that the average age at death of the left handers was about nine years younger than that of the right handers looking at 2000 cases.
According to scientists, having one hemisphere dominate is much more efficient, which is why some left handers are at increased risk for learning impairments and brain disorders. The brain is “cross wired” so that the left hemisphere controls the right-handed side of the body and vice-versa. Which is why we say that only left handers are in their right minds.
Left handers make up only about 15% of the world’s population. In west Virginia, there is a town called Left hand which came about from a nearby Creek called Lefthand Run.
In the Western land, famous celebrities are found to be south paws. This include Babe Ruth, Bill Gates, Ringo Star, Angelina Jolie, Tina Fey, Opera Winfrey, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Formal President Barack Obama etc.

In Africa, left handed is forbidden. No matter the religious observance, the left hand is associated with disrespect and bad manners. It is believed that the left hands are used to perform tasks that are dirty and unclean.
Cultural understanding and cultural awareness is a vital part of international communication, knowing using the left hand is considered rude in African cultures is just the beginning of positive nonverbal communications.
The idea scripted in the minds of Africans about being left handed is barbaric and superstitious is awkward. The stigma of “sinister” dirty lefties has persisted due to societal mores in Africa. Its rather unfortunate that being left handed is regarded as a taboo in some African society. Unlike the Whites who see south paws as strange people who can do exceedingly what the right-handed person can do.
In schools, teachers will tap the hand of a child and say “you are not supposed to write with your left hand”. At homes, mother’s always want to force their wards to use their right hand to eat even when they are left handed naturally.
If each African country can pay heed to the world’s left handers day which is on 13th August and celebrated equally as the other holidays, it will make good impact on all people and change the mindset of some people especially Africans.
Left handedness has been celebrated in other cultures, where lists of movies stars and even six out of seven Presidents of the United States have been left handed.
I will urge the ministry for Education to introduce books and other learning materials into the education systems which will boost and improve the studies of pupils who are left handers. Organizing workshops for teachers and educate them on how to aid the left-handed child to bring out their potentials.
