The Youth Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Sefwi Wiawso in Western-North Region has petitioned founder Jerry John Rawlings to call on the National Executive Committee (NEC) to call an extraordinary congress to change the current flagbearer.
According to the youth, the recent revelation from the Airbus SE trial in the UK has “really dented our image and most especially our candidate which seems to have been the main bribe taker as alleged”.
The approved judgement by the Crown Courts of Southwark referred to a highly elected Ghanaian official – Government Official 1 – as pivotal in the payment of bribe to procure military aircrafts from Airbus SE.
Though the judgement did not mention any names, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) pointed out that the official is no other than former president John Dramani Mahama.
This, the youth in Sefwi Wiawso, seems to have also bought into.
In their petition signed by Benjamin Asefuah, the youth recalled how perception of corruption had nearly forced Mr Rawlings out of the party.
“Sir, this party of ours was formed under the pillars of probity and accountability and zero tolerance for corruption.
“It is therefore strange that there were so much corruption in the previous NDC government which nearly made you leave the party as has been alleged.”
The petition expressed another worry about the delay in naming a vice presidential candidate on the part of Mr Mahama.
“Sir, it has never happened in the history of the 4th republic that a presidential candidate has been elected in opposition and after one year still can’t a Vice to partner him.
“All these put together raises out fears that if the candidate is not changed then we should forget about any win in 2020.”
They ultimately want Mr Rawlings to use his status in the party to call for a congress “to put the interest of the party first for a fresh candidate to lead the party to victory 2020”.
