A member of the National Democratic Congress'(NDC’s) Legal team Abraham Amaliba has alleged that the National Identification Authority(NIA) is deliberately preventing its members from getting the Ghana card.
According to him, this has been the challenge, especially in places that are earmarked as the stronghold of the National Democratic Congress.
He made the allegation on Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio while commenting on complaints by members of the the party in getting their Ghana Card
Amaliba said the party has had to attach a Lawyer to every constituency in order to get its members to be registered for the Ghana Card without any form of challenges.
“I have indicated that the NIA has also decided that, in our strong areas they slow down the process of issuing the cards. And I have examples of that. There is a guy who lives in Kumasi, [and] once your name is a Northern name they frustrate you. When you want to register, they raise objections and these objections can take you a long time.
I didn’t register in Kumasi but this is someone who called me to tell me and gave me that situation he found himself in. He proceeded to Bongo so I have to call the NDC Chairman or was it the secretary, one of them, to assist him to register and he registered and came back to Kumasi.”
he Electoral Commission has indicated plans to make the Ghana Card the only form of identification for persons who will want to register for a voter’s ID card.
This position has been vehemently criticized by the largest opposition party, NDC, who say it shouldn’t be so because not all Ghanaians have the Ghana Card.
