Chief financiers within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are sponsoring former President John Mahama’s comeback to contest as flagbearer of the main opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako has revealed.
Chairman Wontumi told GhanaNewsPage.Com in an exclusive interview that the NPP is neck deep in the campaign of the former President and will do everything within its means to ensure that former President Mahama is elected NDC flagbearer for the 2020 elections.

“In politics, you have to strategise and we strategized to ensured that NDC will elect Mahama as their flagbearer for 2020, we need him so we have made sure that we are sponsoring his campaign, we are doing everything within our means to ensure that Mahama is elected to lead the NDC again and later, they will see what we will do to him…,” he told GhanaNewsPage.Com in an exclusive interview.
According to him, the NPP financiers worked hard to ensure that former President Mahama is favourite to lead the NDC party because he has lots of weaknesses that the NPP will sell to Ghanaian voters to ensure that Mahama is rejected.
Former President John Mahama on August 23, 2018 officially declared his intention to contest his party’s flagbearership.
Mr Mahama’s declaration brought to an end, months of speculation in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Ghana as a whole as to whether the former President would seek the leadership of the party one more time.
His aides went to present his letter of intent at the NDC’s headquarters at Adabraka in Accra.
Ghana’s former Consul General to Dubai, Ambassador Daniel Osei however claimed that Mr. Mahama “was too drunk to present the letter of intent himself”.
He alleged that, minutes to the time of departure to the NDC headquarters at Adabraka, aides of the former President found him intoxicated thus resolved to present the letter on his behalf to the disappointment of the “rented” supporters.
But Chairman Wontumi told GhanaNewsPage.Com that the NPP knows very well that Mahama has lots of money and will be sharing it to the delegates so he will be re-elected to lead the NDC once more.
