The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said that the party is likely to present a ‘chosen’ or ‘consensus’ candidate to contest the vacant Ayawaso West Wuogon seat.
Sammy Awuku disclosed in an interview on Accra-based Okay FM as monitored by GhanaNewsPage.Com that the leadership of the party is considering that option because of how crucial the impending by-election is to the political party.
The Ayawaso-West Wuogon seat became vacant after the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Constituency, Emmanuel Kyermanteng Agyarko died in the USA where he had gone for medical treatment.
Ahead of the funeral for the late MP, several members of his party, the NPP, has started lobbying to contest the seat on behalf of the party.
Some of these people, according to Sammy Awuku have already started calling National Executives of the political party to lobby for the right to lead the NPP into the by-elections.
Others, he said, are also busily announcing their presence on social media and campaigning as well.
He however reacted that the party will likely present a ‘consensus candidate’ to contest the seat due to how critical winning that seat is for the NPP.
In line with this, NPP leadership led by Rita Asobayere, Henry Nana Boakye, Omari Wadie and he, Sammy Awuku have started meeting with the NPP executives at Ayawaso West Wuogon to try and identify that consensus candidates.
“We met with the constituency executives in Ayawaso West Wougon, we school them on by-elections and asked them to know that by-elections not just any elections, we may appoint or hold primaries.
“National in consultation with regional and constituency will decide on who will lead the party…the party will prefer a consensus candidate, unless the party believes it is necessary to hold primaries …,” he said.
