A Reverend Father of the Roman Catholic Church in Ghana has said that the views expressed by the leader of the Roman Catholic Church worldwide, Pope Francis on same sex marriage represents his personal opinions and not that of the church.

Pope Francis has said that he thinks same-sex couples should be allowed to have “civil unions”.

He made the comments, which are a significant departure from Vatican law and his predecessors, in a documentary directed by Evgeny Afineevsky.

“Homosexual people have a right to be in a family,” he said in the film, which premiered on Wednesday.

“They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or made miserable over it. What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered,” the Pope is quoted as saying.

The statement has since generated controversy both online and in the traditional media.

Commenting on this on Anɔpa Bɔfoɔ, Angel FM’s Morning Show on Thursday, the Rev Father was of the opinion that the views expressed by the Pope only represented his view on the issue of homosexuality.

“I want to put on record that the Pope expressed his personal opinion and not that of the church, the church frowns on same sex marriage but agrees that same sex marriage is a intrinsically disordered bahaviour and gays must not be discriminated against,” he said.

He further threatened not to abide by any law that would call on Catholics Priests to bless same sex marriages.
