Real Tamale United (RTU) are promoted to the Ghana Premier League after overtaking Bofoakwa Tano on the final day of the Division One League season.
RTU beat Unity FC 2-0 while Bofoakwa drew 0-0 with Berekum Arsenal as Tamale-based went top of Zone 1 and in the process secure their return to top-flight after eight years.
RTU’s demotion in 2013 was a mixture of financial crisis and managerial inefficiencies which affected results.
Before the final day of that season, the Northern Lions had failed to record a win in 29 games.
They had conceded as many as 71 goals and scored just 19 times – an average of 0.65 per game.
But on Sunday, their return was confirmed. RTU, despite their slim chance heading into the final day, secured the final top-flight ticket at the expense of Bofoakwa.
Bofoakwa fell short in their must-win game against Berekum Arsenal as RTU sneaked through with victory against Unity FC.
Both Bofoakwa and RTU finished level on 65 points, but Tamale club qualify thanks to a better head-to-head record.
RTU join Bibiani GoldStars and Accra Lions as the promoted teams, replacing the relegated trio of Inter Allies, Ebusua Dwarfs and Liberty Professionals.
