A communicator of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Fred Agbenyo has said that the removal of Electoral Commission Boss, Charlotte Osei was top of the agenda of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after winning the 2016 elections.
According to Agbenyo, elements within the leadership of the NPP put in place various strategies all in attempt to remove Charlotte Osei from office right after Nana Akufo-Addo was sworn in as President.
“Leading members of the NPP stated upon the election of Charlotte Osei that she will be removed when NPP comes to power and they started putting things in place for her removal the moment they came to power, it forms part of the NPP’s grand agenda of the party…,” he alleged on Accra-based Peace FM on Tuesday as monitored by GhanaNewsPage.Com.
President Akufo-Addo on Thursday night announced in a statement that he had removed the Electoral Commission chairperson, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies following receipt of the report of a committee set up by the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, pursuant to Article 146(4) of the Constitution, to investigate separate complaints brought by some Ghanaian citizens.
The provisions of Article 146 (9) of the Constitution require the President to act in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee, but some members of the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have accused the government of masterminding the removal due to the NPP’s public criticism and opposition to the appointment of Charlotte Osei.
Charlotte Osei breached procurement laws.
The Committee concluded that Charlotte Osei blatantly breached procurement laws in the award of several contracts in her three-year period at the helm of affairs, prior to the 2016 elections.
The allegations against the EC officials, Agbenyo claimed were all made up just to cause disaffection for Charlotte Osei.
He claimed the NPP knocked the heads of the EC Boss and her deputies together just to achieve its sole motive of getting rid of Charlotte Osei.
“NPP and President Akufo-Addo didn’t want Charlotte Osei in office and the only way was to knock the heads of the commissioners to cause disaffection and they have achieved their aim…,” he claimed.
