The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah has said she has not issued any apology letter to the Multimedia Group for declining to grant an intern of the Group’s Adom FM business unit an interview.

She also said her office has not issued any such apology.

Speaking on Oman FM’s ‘Boiling Point’ programme on Tuesday evening (23 July 2019), Mrs Dapaah said rather, two managerial staff from Multimedia called her on Monday to apologise.

Despite the apology, Mrs Dapaah said she will report the media house to the National Media Commission (NMC) and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) so that the disrespect to authorities will end.

“It is not true, we have not written any letter of apology, that letter is fake, it’s a fake story,” she stated.

“I saw the statement on a WhatsApp platform and I replied that it’s fake. Some leaders from Adom FM rather called me to apologise but that notwithstanding, I’ve decided to write to the Media Commission and GJA for those things to stop.”

Explaining what transpired between her and the intern, Mrs Dapaah said: “She called me on the cell phone, she refused to answer how she got my number and what her name was and I told her I was in a meeting so I asked her to drop the call because I didn’t want to do that”.

The Fake Apology Statement

A statement circulated on social media on Tuesday, 23 July 2019 which was signed by the Public Relations Unit of the Sanitation Ministry, apologised to the Multimedia Group and the intern from the Ghana Institute of Journalism for the incident.

The statement read: “We wish to apologise to the reporter and the media house for any inconvenience caused and hope we all continue to work more closely together.”

The statement explained further that the minister did not ignore the reporter on the basis that she was an intern but because she was not prompted earlier enough by the news editor about the call.

“The minister was in a meeting when she received the call and was, therefore, requesting that the reporter call later. She was of the view that the news editor could have prompted her earlier for the interview. The sector minister did not ignore the reporter on the basis that she was an intern,” the statement stated.

What Happened Between Cecilia Dapaah And The Intern?

Mrs Dapaah recently told off Rahinatu Abdul Bach on the phone when the GIJ student called her up for an interview.

The minister said the young lady’s request for an interview was disrespectful of her as a state official and her office as well because she was an intern.

“Who gave you the permission to call me to speak to me directly like that?” the Minister queried the intern.

“You don’t respect … please go off”, she said as she dropped the call.

The intern had been directed by her editor, Mr Samuel Dowuona to get the ministry’s reaction to reports that some persons caught littering were ordered by either the police or ordinary citizens to clean the streets as punishment.
