Two people lost their lives and several others remain trapped in a mining pit that collapsed at Akrokerri Bronikrom, in the Ashanti Region.

A 35-year-old man and another were part of the team of miners that went to exploit for gold in a mining pit near an abandoned public toilet in the community.

GhanaNewsPage.Com gathered that the miners had been warned not to mine in the pit near the public toilet but they had refused.

They usually go to mine there at night and it was on one of their numerous expeditions that the pit caved in leaving them trapped.

One other person who was rescued from the pit has taken to his heels for fear of being arrested by the Police.

Interestingly, residents of the community are frustrating rescue efforts as they rush for stones that the excavator used for the rescue mission brings out.
