Some party executives of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ho West District of the Volta region has said, deployment of military personnel to the area has nothing to do with the voter registration exercise, as claimed by some residents and Chiefs of the area.
On Monday 6 July 2020, Military men were deployed to boarder communities, Honuta, Klave, Shia, Kpedze and Dzolokpuita in the Ho and Ho West districts, with an aim to protect Ghana, Togo entry points amidst the COVID-19.
At a press conference held by Chiefs and Queen Mothers from seventeen Paramountcy in the district on Thursday, 9 July 2020, they indicated that the presence of the Military personnel in the region has created fear among residents.
The Chiefs led by Osie Adzatekpor VII, Paramount Chief of Avatime traditional area, accused the security men of harassment and intimidation of residents in Honuta. The Chiefs noted that, the militants, stormed a registration centre and challenged some residents of their Ghanaian citizenship, which left many locals in the community without the registering for the voter card over fears of being harassed by the soldiers.
At a press conference organised to react to the development at the Ho West NPP office in Dzolokpuita on Friday 10 July 2020, the executives of the party said deployment of Military officers to the district is an annual arrangement by the Ghana Arm Forces (GAF) to train officers in forests situated in the district, hence the news of involving in the voter registration exercise is a mere accusation.
” The presence of the Military in these few days in Honuta area and Dzolokpuita area is something they have been doing annually, the military come here to go under their training and that is what they have done. I’m very sure today (Friday) is their last day in the training ground” He said.
Communications Officer of the Ho West NPP, Steven Akpabli accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the area of perpetrating the development.
” The NDC is perpetrating some false information out there that the NPP in the constituency is actually conniving and condoning with the security agencies and brutalizing people at the boarder town which is not true”
He mentioned that, although there was an incident which nearly resulted into scuffle in the community, the District Security Council intervened and calm has been restored.
