Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, has reported that three Ghanaians have been injured in the ongoing xenophobic unrest in South Africa.

The High Commission, through Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, said it is ensuring that the injured Ghanaians receive the necessary medical attention.

The mission further reports that on 5 September 2019, the South African security agencies commenced an exercise to check the resident permits of foreigners residing in Sunnyside, a suburb of Pretoria.

Five Ghanaians have so far been arrested and detained at the Sunnyside police station in that exercise.

“Officials of the High Commission have visited the police station to provide consular assistance to the detained Ghanaians and are following up on the matter,” a statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

Nigerians and other black African nationals living in South Africa have been under attack from the locals.

The South Africans claim black foreigners have taken over their jobs and, thus, have attacked their businesses and looted their shops in a wave of xenophobic attacks that have received worldwide condemnation.
