The Scandal That Shocked a Nation

On April 2, 2024, a video allegedly showing Serwaa Amihere and businessman Henry Fitz in an intimate setting made its way onto social media platforms, sparking widespread controversy. The footage led to public outrage and intense scrutiny of Serwaa’s private life, tarnishing her image and raising questions about her professional integrity.

Serwaa’s employer, EIB Network, immediately launched an investigation into the allegations. In a July 5, 2024 press release, the network stated that a thorough review had cleared Serwaa of any wrongdoing. They also confirmed that legal action had been initiated against individuals responsible for distributing the video.

Henry Fitz, a wealthy but controversial figure, was widely suspected of leaking the video. Although the exact circumstances remain unclear, many speculated that a fallout between the two may have precipitated the incident.

Emotional Toll and Struggles with Depression

The media storm and public backlash took a significant toll on Serwaa’s mental health. While she maintained a stoic silence during the months of controversy, she revealed during her address how deeply the ordeal affected her.

“I was depressed, actually. Many of you didn’t see me cry, and that will never happen, but she did,” Serwaa said, referring to Obuobia Darko Opoku, a journalist and politician who played a pivotal role in helping her cope.

“She came and said, ‘Let’s go and buy ice cream.’ I wasn’t talking to anyone, but she came to pick me up. She took me to Osu, and I remember trying to wear a cap. She asked, ‘Why? Why do you want to hide your face? Let’s go.’ She bought me a big cup of ice cream and said, ‘Today, eat all the ice cream you can.’”

Serwaa expressed her heartfelt gratitude, adding:
“Auntie Obuobia, thank you because I never told you how grateful I was for that ride. It did me a lot of good.”

Lessons for the Youth

Drawing on her experiences, Serwaa used the platform to caution young people, particularly women, about the consequences of their decisions.

“Whatever decision you make, step you take, or choice you make in your youth will definitely come back some three, four, or seven years to bite you hard in the face. And that was exactly what happened to me last year,” she stated.

She emphasized the importance of being thoughtful and deliberate in making choices, highlighting how youthful decisions can have lasting repercussions.

“There are so many young ones here. Please, be extremely careful and picky about the decisions you make while you’re young. I’m not old, but I’m older than many of you here. The choices you make today can come back and bite you in the face years later,” Serwaa advised.
