Malaysia Backs Ghana’s Bid to Lead Africa in Palm Oil Production

The Malaysian Palm Oil Association (MPOA) has pledged to support Ghana’s ambition to become Africa’s top palm oil producer.

In a meeting organized by the Malaysian High Commission in Ghana, representatives from both countries discussed strategic partnerships, technological advancements, and industry challenges, aiming to boost Ghana’s palm oil sector to the forefront of the African market.

The breakfast meeting, held in Accra, brought together Ghanaian and Malaysian palm oil producers to explore new approaches for growth and sustainability in the sector.

Malaysia, which shares a similar post-independence economic history with Ghana, has become a global leader in palm oil production, while Ghana continues to tackle economic challenges.

This collaboration represents a valuable opportunity for Ghana to leverage Malaysian expertise in developing a more robust palm oil industry.

During the event, thr deputy Malaysian High Commissioner, Syed Nauzer Idid, emphasized the importance of sustainable practices and certification programs such as the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). These programs, he noted, address global sustainability concerns and could help Ghana enhance its competitive edge in both African and international markets.

The deputy High Commissioner also highlighted Ghana’s role as host of the AfCFTA Secretariat and urged Ghanaian producers to capitalize on this position to improve market competitiveness.

Malaysia’s support, he suggested, would empower Ghana with the expertise and industry knowledge necessary to advance its palm oil production.

The collaboration between Ghana and Malaysia began with a visit from Malaysia’s Palm Oil Production Council in June 2024, inviting Ghana to join a network that could help the country lead in African palm oil production. Through this partnership, Ghana is expected to gain insights on production techniques, marketing strategies, and sustainability practices essential for industry growth.
