A tragic road accident early this morning has left at least 10 people dead after a cement truck collided with a VIP bus on the Techiman–Kumasi route.
The crash, which occurred around 4:00am on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, happened along the Offinso–Abofuor stretch of the highway. According to information gathered from the scene, the cement trailer rammed into the commercial bus under unclear circumstances, leading to one of the deadliest accidents recorded on the route in recent months.
Eyewitnesses say the impact was severe.
Parts of the bus were completely mangled, trapping several passengers inside. Rescue efforts in the early hours were difficult, as the accident occurred before dawn and traffic on the road was light. By the time help arrived, some victims had already lost their lives on the spot.
Initial reports earlier in the day indicated that at least six people had died. However, as emergency services continued recovery efforts, the death toll later rose to 10. Several other passengers sustained critical injuries and were rushed to St. Patrick’s Hospital at Offinso-Maase for emergency treatment.
Health workers at the facility are said to be working around the clock to stabilize the injured, some of whom remain in serious condition.
The Techiman–Kumasi road is one of the busiest transport corridors in the country, frequently used by long-distance buses, heavy-duty trucks, and commercial vehicles transporting goods across regions. Unfortunately, it has also gained a reputation for fatal accidents, especially involving articulated trucks and buses traveling at high speeds.
Residents in the area say early morning accidents have become common, with fatigue, speeding, and poor visibility often playing a role. Although the exact cause of this crash has not yet been officially confirmed, road users are already calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations on the stretch.
This latest accident has once again reignited concerns about road safety in Ghana. Many families woke up today to devastating news, with loved ones failing to reach their destinations. For some passengers, what began as a routine journey ended in tragedy.
Police and emergency officials are expected to begin investigations into the incident, focusing on the condition of the vehicles involved, the actions of the drivers, and whether road conditions contributed to the crash. The remains of the deceased are expected to be transported to nearby morgues pending identification by family members.
As the nation mourns yet another deadly road accident, many are questioning when meaningful action will be taken to reduce the rising number of fatalities on major highways. For now, the focus remains on the victims, the injured fighting for their lives, and families trying to come to terms with sudden loss.
This tragic collision serves as a painful reminder of the dangers on Ghana’s roads and the urgent need for improved safety measures, especially on busy highways like the Techiman–Kumasi route.
