A 53-year-old Ghanaian man, George Ennin, has been fatally stabbed in what police describe as a random and unprovoked attack while he was on his way to work in the Bronx, New York.
According to reports, Ennin who worked as a security guard was attacked on Monday, January 5, 2026, around 2 p.m., near Third Avenue and East 157th Street in the Melrose/Mott Haven area. Witnesses and surveillance footage indicate that a stranger approached him without provocation, kicked him, and then stabbed him multiple times.
After the attack, Ennin reportedly managed to walk several steps in search of help before collapsing. He was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Tragically, the incident occurred on his first day back at work after returning from a month-long vacation in Ghana, where he had spent time with family.
George Ennin is remembered by neighbors and community members as a hard-working father of two teenage daughters who lived in the Bronx and dedicated his life to providing for his children. Those who knew him say he was quiet, responsible, and focused on work and family.
Police have since arrested Sean Jones, a 38-year-old man described as a repeat offender with approximately 20 prior arrests, mostly related to robbery and assault. Jones was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon and has been charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon.
The killing has reignited public debate around violent repeat offenders, street safety, and criminal justice enforcement in New York City. Many residents are questioning how an individual with such an extensive arrest record was still free and able to carry out a deadly attack in broad daylight.
As investigations continue, the Ghanaian community in New York and beyond has been thrown into mourning, with many calling for justice for George Ennin and greater accountability to prevent similar tragedies.
