Tensions boiled over in Ghana’s Parliament last week when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin sharply criticized Grace Ayensu-Danquah, the Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan.
The heated exchange happened on Friday, March 27, 2026, during discussions on the Governance Advisory Council Bill 2026 Dr. Ayensu-Danquah had moved a motion for the bill to be read a second time when Afenyo-Markin openly challenged her position on the floor.Later, Parliament passed the bill, which seeks to establish an independent Governance Advisory Council.
The new body is meant to strengthen accountability, fight corruption, and protect human rights by ensuring public officials are answerable for how they manage their responsibilities. However, the proceedings were marred by the usual back-and-forth.
Dr. Ayensu-Danquah expressed concern about the tone and decorum of the debate, particularly the way the Minority Leader engaged with her.The incident has sparked fresh questions about the level of respect and civility among lawmakers during parliamentary sessions.
