In what’s becoming a familiar story lately, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken yet another hit in Kano State. Former Governor Kabiru Gaya, a well-known political heavyweight, has officially resigned from the party.
Gaya, who served as Kano’s governor and later represented Kano South as a senator, is the latest in a string of high-profile exits that are raising eyebrows, especially across northern Nigeria.
He broke the news in a straightforward resignation letter sent to the chairman of his ward in Gaya Arewa, Gaya Local Government Area. The decision, which took effect on April 5, 2026, didn’t come on a whim. According to the letter, it followed weeks of deep thinking and talks with his supporters and key people in his constituency.“
I hereby formally tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) effective today, 5th April 2026,” he wrote.Gaya went on to express gratitude for his time in the party, especially his years as senator from 2015 to 2023. “It has been an honour to serve under the platform of the party,” he said. “I remain grateful for the support, trust, and opportunities given to me during this period.”
But he added that after careful reflection and wide consultations, he believes stepping away is the right thing to do — both for his constituents and his own personal convictions. While Gaya hasn’t publicly said where he’s heading next, political insiders in Kano are already buzzing with talk that this could be the start of a move toward aligning with Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of next year’s elections.
