The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Navrongo, Madam Faustina Abulu, has ordered the immediate shutdown of Awe Senior High Technical School following a serious security incident that escalated into chaos on campus.
According to information available, the decision was taken after what the MCE described as an unacceptable situation that could not be tolerated, prompting her to suspend all academic and non-academic activities at the school until further notice.
“What has happened is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. As a result, I am closing down the school immediately,” the MCE stated, adding that the closure will remain in force pending further assessment.
How the Incident Unfolded
Sources indicate that the trouble began when a stranger allegedly invaded the school campus, gaining access to the dormitory area. The exact intention of the individual remains unclear. However, students who serve as cadets reportedly noticed the intrusion and pursued the individual after he left the premises.
The cadets later apprehended the person and subjected him to punishment before handing him over.
It later emerged that the individual was from Bawku, and after the incident, he reportedly returned to his community to report what had happened. This development reportedly sparked tensions, as a group of people allegedly returned to the school, angry over how the individual had been treated.
Situation Turns Violent on Campus
What began as a security concern quickly escalated. Eyewitnesses say the situation took on a tribal dimension, with confrontations between some community members and individuals on campus.
Videos circulating on social media show students being chased from their dormitories, while school facilities including the library and storerooms were vandalised. The campus was reportedly left in disarray.
By the following morning, the school, which has a population of over 1,700 students, had been largely deserted. Reports suggest that fewer than 300 students remained, with many fleeing for safety.
MCE Steps In, Orders Students Home
In response to the deteriorating situation, Madam Faustina Ablo reportedly visited the school and instructed all remaining students to pack their belongings and leave the campus immediately. The closure, she explained, was necessary to restore calm and allow security agencies to stabilise the area.
Police personnel have since been deployed to the campus, and security remains in place. As of the latest updates, the school premises are largely empty, with no active academic activity ongoing.
Public Reactions Shift Focus
While the shutdown has triggered widespread reactions online, some observers have expressed concern that public discourse has shifted away from the core security and safety issues, focusing instead on the MCE’s manner of speech rather than the gravity of the situation.
Others argue that the incident exposes deeper concerns about school security, community relations, and emergency response protocols, especially in boarding institutions.
Unanswered Questions Remain
For now, the school remains closed, and authorities have not indicated when students will return. Parents, teachers, and students are awaiting further directives, while many Ghanaians continue to call for a thorough investigation into how a single incident spiralled into a full-scale campus shutdown.
What is clear is that Awe Senior High Technical School is not just dealing with a closure but with a broader conversation about safety, accountability, and crisis management in Ghana’s educational institutions.
