Bayelsa State has been thrown into mourning following the death of its Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on Thursday, December 11, after collapsing in his office.
According to sources within Government House, the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m., while the deputy governor was carrying out his official duties. Those present said he slumped unexpectedly and was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, for emergency care. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he was later confirmed dead.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who was born on September 5, 1965, was 60 years old. People close to the administration revealed that he had been maintaining an extremely demanding work routine for years. Some described him as a “workaholic” who was deeply committed to his responsibilities and seldom made time for rest—a trait they believe may have taken a toll on his health.
There are still unanswered questions surrounding the exact medical cause of his death. Efforts to independently verify details from the hospital proved difficult, as the FMC Public Relations Officer, Ben Akpedi, did not respond to calls seeking confirmation.
However, his media aide, Doubara Atasi, confirmed the unfortunate development to reporters but refused to go into specifics, saying official details would be provided at the appropriate time.
Additional confirmation came from his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, who disclosed that the formal announcement was made during an expanded State Executive Council meeting held at Government House, Yenagoa. The meeting had in attendance key government figures, including the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, and Deputy Speaker Michael Ogbere.
Alabrah noted that the governor briefed the council after consulting with senior political leaders and stakeholders in the state. He also urged Bayelsa residents to stay united in this difficult period, assuring them that the government remains stable and focused on delivering ongoing development plans.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo’s death marks a profound loss for Bayelsa’s political landscape. Tributes and reactions from across the state and country are expected as the government begins formal procedures to honor his service and legacy.
May his soul rest in peace.
