CAF strips Senegal of AFCON 2025 Victory 3-0, Handing Over the Trophy to Morocco

AFCON and Senegal

It’s not every day that a major continental final ends like this. But that’s exactly what has happened at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 (AFCON), where the Confederation of African Football (Confederation of African Football) has officially overturned the final result and awarded victory to Morocco.

In a late-night statement released around 9:37 PM on March 17, 2026, CAF announced that, based on Article 84 of the AFCON regulations, the Senegal national team had forfeited the final match. As a result, the game has been recorded as a 3–0 win in favour of Morocco, handing the trophy to the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF).

Just like that, the entire outcome of the tournament changed not on the pitch, but from a decision taken off it.

Barely a minute after CAF’s statement dropped, top football journalist Fabrizio Romano took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the shocking development.

“Morocco have been announced as AFCON winners with final result overturned by CAF. Senegal have been declared to have forfeited the match with Morocco declared 3-0 winners by official statement.”

That post alone sparked massive reactions online. From Accra to Dakar, from Lagos to Casablanca, fans were confused, angry, and asking serious questions.

While CAF has not yet fully detailed the exact incident that led to the forfeiture, Article 84 typically applies to disciplinary breaches, rule violations, or situations where a team fails to comply with official match regulations.

But for many football lovers, especially across Africa, this kind of decision in a final match feels heavy.

You play the whole tournament, fight through tough opponents, reach the final and then the result is decided like this?

That’s where the frustration is coming from.

Big Questions People Are Asking

Right now, football fans are not keeping quiet. Everywhere online, people are asking:

  • Does CAF really have the power to overturn a final like this?
  • Was Senegal treated fairly in this decision?
  • How will the Senegalese players and fans feel after this?
  • Is this the best decision CAF could take at such a crucial moment?
  • Can FIFA step in and review or overturn this ruling?

Technically, yes CAF has the authority under its regulations to enforce such decisions. But football is not just about rules; it’s about fairness, emotions, and the spirit of the game.

And right now, many feel that spirit has been shaken.

For Senegal, this will be a very bitter pill to swallow. Imagine preparing for a final, playing your heart out, only for the title to be taken away through an administrative decision.

Players, fans, and the entire nation will feel this deeply.

On the other side, Morocco are officially champions. But even for Moroccan fans, the celebration may feel mixed. Winning a trophy is always sweet but this kind of ending is not the usual way any team wants to lift a major title.

Interestingly, this situation has brought back controversial comments made by former footballer Jamie Carragher, who once suggested that AFCON is “not a major tournament.”

At the time, many Africans strongly disagreed and rightly so.

But now, with this kind of controversy happening at the highest level of African football, some fans are reluctantly asking: Are these incidents affecting the global respect of AFCON?

Can FIFA Intervene?

The global football governing body, FIFA, may have a role if Senegal decides to appeal the decision. Typically, cases like this can be escalated to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if there are grounds for dispute.

However, such processes take time and for now, the official record still stands: Morocco are AFCON 2025 champions.

AFCON 2025 had everything passion, talent, big games, and unforgettable moments. But this final decision has now overshadowed the football itself.

Instead of celebrating goals, tactics, and performances, the conversation has shifted to regulations, forfeits, and fairness.

And that’s not what fans signed up for.

For many Ghanaians watching from home, this situation feels both shocking and disappointing. Football is supposed to be decided on the pitch not in boardrooms.

Yes, rules are rules. But timing and transparency matter.

Right now, CAF has a lot of explaining to do.

Because one thing is clear, this decision has left more questions than answers.
