The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has taken the rare step of suspending the salaries of 2,563 public sector employees who failed to participate in Ghana’s nationwide headcount exercise. The measure, recommended by the Auditor-General, targets staff who did not present themselves during the verification process conducted in 2025 across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
In a press release dated January 30, the CAGD confirmed that while most January 2026 salaries have been processed, the wages of defaulting personnel have been withheld.
“The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) wishes to inform all Government of Ghana employees on the National Payroll managed by the CAGD that salaries for January 2026 have been paid. However, on the recommendation of the Auditor-General, salaries of 2,563 personnel have been suspended for failing to present themselves during the nationwide headcount exercise conducted across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies in 2025 by the Ghana Audit Service,” the statement read.
The Department urged affected employees to take immediate steps to regularise their status to ensure salary restoration.
“Personnel who did not receive their salaries for January are urged to contact the Ghana Audit Service promptly for necessary clearance. It is essential that those affected ensure their employment status is verified to guarantee reinstatement of their salaries,” it added.
Reaffirming its commitment to accountability, the CAGD emphasized that it remains focused on transparency and the timely payment of salaries in line with Public Financial Management laws.
