Tensions boiled over at Ghana’s main onion market in Adjen Kotoku when armed men from a rival group suddenly stormed the area, trying to seize control.
Traders say the gunmen marched in and declared that no one else was allowed inside. Panic spread quickly as people scrambled for safety. The attack is tied to growing claims of political interference in how the market is run, leaving many worried about rising insecurity.
The situation is even more worrying because it comes at the same time Ghana-bound onion trucks are stuck in Nigeria.
Those vehicles were blocked in what appears to be payback from an earlier quarrel between Ghanaian and Nigerian traders. With supplies already threatened, any disruption at the market could quickly lead to shortages and higher prices across the country.

Mustapha Sulemana Talimu, spokesperson for the Onion Sellers Association, described the frightening scene: “As I speak, they are with guns… they said they don’t want anybody in the market.”He added that earlier attempts to settle the dispute had not lasted, allowing old rivalries to flare up again.
Traders at the market are now urgently calling on the government and security forces to step in before things get worse. They want calm restored fast so that onions can keep flowing to local markets without further interruptions. For the thousands of families who depend on this daily trade, the fear is real: if the market stays shut or unsafe, their livelihoods could be hit hard.
Many are hoping swift action will bring peace back to Adjen Kotoku and protect the vital onion supply chain.
