Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, says Ghana’s economy is in a far better place today than it was a year ago, crediting President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership in his first year back in office.
Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, January 4, 2026, during a discussion on the President’s one-year performance, Kwakye Ofosu said the difference between where the country was and where it is now is clear for anyone willing to be objective.

According to him, the economy which he described as the biggest concern for voters during the last election has seen noticeable improvements across key indicators.
“If you look at the economy, and that was the main issue for Ghanaians barely a year ago, it is obvious that things have changed,” he said. “All the indicators we use to assess economic performance are now pointing in the right direction.”
He stressed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has largely kept faith with the promises it made to the electorate, arguing that the results can be measured without much debate.
“You don’t need any special explanation. Just look at where Ghana was about a year ago and compare it to where we are today,” he added.
Kwakye Ofosu also pointed to the cost of living, saying prices of goods have generally come down, easing pressure on households that were previously struggling.
One of the most notable achievements, he said, is the turnaround of the cedi. Once a major source of worry for businesses and consumers alike, the local currency has now stabilised significantly.
“For the first time in many years that I can remember, the cedi is set to record an annual appreciation of close to 30 percent,” he noted, describing the development as unprecedented in recent times.
He explained that the currency stability has had a ripple effect across the economy, contributing to lower prices in several sectors and restoring some level of confidence.

Overall, the Minister maintained that President Mahama’s first year in his second term has laid a solid foundation, insisting that Ghana is no longer in the fragile position it found itself in when the NDC assumed office.
