Enzo Maresca Leaves Chelsea After 18 Months at Stamford

Enzo Maresca has officially stepped down from his role as Chelsea head coach, bringing his 18-month spell at Stamford Bridge to an end.

The Italian departs with Chelsea sitting fifth in the Premier League table, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal, after a difficult run that saw the Blues record just one win in their last seven league matches. The club is now expected to move quickly, with an announcement on a new head coach anticipated in the coming days.

Confirming the development, Chelsea released a statement announcing the mutual decision to part ways.

“Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca have parted company.

During his time at the club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the club.

With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.

We wish Enzo well for the future.”

Maresca’s final game in charge was Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge. Following the match, the Chelsea boss did not attend his post-match press conference, with reports citing illness amid growing speculation of tension behind the scenes.

Chelsea are next in action on Sunday when they travel to face Manchester City, beginning a demanding January schedule that includes nine matches across four different competitions.

Maresca was appointed Chelsea head coach in June 2024, replacing Mauricio Pochettino after an impressive spell with Leicester City, where he guided the Foxes to the Championship title during the 2023–24 season.

His time at Chelsea began positively, with the club winning four of their first six Premier League matches under his leadership. The team also finished that campaign strongly, securing five victories in their final six league games to clinch a fourth-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Despite recent struggles, Maresca’s tenure delivered silverware. Chelsea lifted the UEFA Conference League in May 2025 following a commanding 4-1 victory over Real Betis. Two months later, the Blues added the FIFA Club World Cup to their trophy cabinet with a convincing 3-0 win over Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain.

Those successes ensure Maresca’s spell at Stamford Bridge ends with notable achievements, even as the club now turns its focus toward a new chapter.
