In a surprising political move in Kano State, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, who was the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for governor in the 2026 election, has officially left the ruling party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Gawuna’s decision puts him firmly in the camp of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the powerful political figure and former NNPP presidential candidate, who himself registered as an ADC member just on Monday.
The former Deputy Governor to Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje announced his resignation from the APC through a letter to the party chairman in his ward (Gawuna Ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area).
In the letter, he simply described the move as “voluntary and personal.”But the real highlight came when Gawuna showed up at the ward to register new ADC members — and he wasn’t alone. Senator Kwankwaso himself accompanied him, along with a large crowd of supporters.Speaking at the event, Gawuna openly declared his loyalty to Kwankwaso,
the man widely seen as the political strongman of Kano politics.“I will not betray him,” Gawuna said. “I have always respected him.” He also added a subtle dig at some political rivals: “Wearing a red cap does not automatically mean loyalty.”Kwankwaso,
for his part, used the occasion to send a stern warning to anyone thinking of rigging the next elections. He made it clear that the government would not tolerate any electoral malpractice.
