Gay Rights Activist Bisi Alimi Calls Out Divorce and Marriage Myths

Bisi Alimi’s Morning Reflections on Divorce, Infidelity, and Society’s Double Standards

Gay rights activist Bisi Alimi recently shared a deep and candid reflection on Instagram, touching on everything from divorce rates to societal judgments around love, sexuality, and shame. His post was raw, unfiltered, and surprisingly relatable.

Bisi began by highlighting a sobering statistic. Around 40 to 50 percent of heterosexual marriages end in divorce globally. But he also noted a less talked-about phenomenon, the “silent divorce,” where couples stay under the same roof but are no longer emotionally or romantically connected. For him, this shows that the idea of the perfect marriage is often more myth than reality.

He did not shy away from talking about the role of infidelity. According to Bisi, cheating remains one of the main reasons straight marriages collapse. And yet, society quickly points fingers at gay men as being “promiscuous,” unfairly treating queer relationships as morally inferior. He argued that even the HIV/AIDS crisis was twisted into a narrative that reinforced these harmful stereotypes.

Bisi also spoke about the weight of societal shame, noting that many parents stay in unhappy marriages not out of love, but because they fear judgment from family, friends, or their community. This fear, he suggested, gets passed down through generations, teaching us to prioritize appearances over genuine happiness.

He did not hold back in critiquing religious institutions either, pointing out that some of the biggest sexual predators are men with scriptures in their hands and microphones in front of congregations. It was a bold call-out, emphasizing the hypocrisy that often hides behind moral authority.

Ending his reflection on a lighter note, Bisi admitted that even he was not sure why he woke up thinking about all of this. “I do not even know why I woke up like this today. Let me go back to living my Brazilian dream,” he wrote.

Bisi’s post is more than just a rant. It is a wake-up call to examine the myths we have been told about love, morality, and relationships. It challenges us to rethink societal labels, confront our own fears of judgment, and recognize that lasting love, gay or straight, does not come with a one-size-fits-all manual.
