Ghana is set to revive its national airline within the next year, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has revealed. Speaking during the maiden flight of Air Tanzania at Kotoka International Airport on January 29, 2026, Nikpe confirmed that all regulatory and documentation processes are on track for the carrier’s official launch.
“Since the liquidation of Ghana Airways, multiple attempts to re-establish a national airline have stalled. But under President Mahama, a dedicated task force is making steady progress. Within 12 months, we will celebrate a Ghanaian airline flying internationally,” he said.
While details on ownership and fleet acquisition were not disclosed, the minister assured that the project is moving steadily. The initiative follows previous failed efforts, including the cessation of Ghana Airways in 2004 and Ghana International Airlines in 2010, as well as several unsuccessful public and private proposals.
The government inaugurated a 10-member National Airline Task Force on May 8, 2025, to spearhead the revival. Chaired by Charles Asare, former Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, the team includes aviation experts, former regulators, and Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari. Their responsibilities include developing a viable business model, engaging technical and strategic partners, overseeing regulatory approvals, and managing staffing, fleet acquisition, and route planning.
The revival of Ghana’s national carrier marks a major step in strengthening the country’s aviation sector and expanding its global connectivity.
