Ghana – In a swift maritime operation, the Ghana Navy has intercepted a canoe carrying a large quantity of suspected cannabis (Indian hemp) near Ada in the Greater Accra Region.
The operation took place on Thursday, March 29, 2026, at Goi Beach, south of Sege. Operatives from the Navy’s Special Boat Squadron, acting on credible intelligence, tracked and pursued the suspicious canoe as it tried to come ashore. As the naval team closed in, the suspects on board panicked, abandoned the vessel, and fled into the surrounding area.
A thorough search of the canoe revealed 37 sacks filled with compressed substances believed to be Indian hemp.According to a preliminary assessment by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), each sack contained roughly 70 parcels of the suspected drug. Other items recovered from the canoe included two gallons of premix fuel, five empty gallons, and an outboard motor.
The seized canoe and all the items have since been handed over to NACOC for further investigation and possible prosecution. In a statement issued on Sunday, March 29, the Ghana Armed Forces praised the operation, noting that it forms part of the Navy’s growing efforts to secure Ghana’s coastline.
The Navy is currently expanding its presence with plans to establish new forward operating bases at Keta, Ada, Winneba, and Elmina. Once completed, the Ada base is expected to significantly boost the Navy’s ability to patrol and interdict smuggling activities in that exact stretch
