Ghana Olympic Committee Rolls Out Europe-Based Training Programme for Athletes Ahead of 2028 Olympics

The Ghana Olympic Committee has launched a targeted athlete development programme in Europe to support two of Ghana’s promising talents as the nation prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Through the Olympic Solidarity initiative, Judo star Elizabeth Serwaa Oduro has been sent to France for advanced training, while Taekwondo ace Henritta Naa Ayele Armah will train in Germany to further her athletic development. The programme provides travel support to the training centres, return tickets, and a $5,000 travel subsidy for competition-related travel.

Speaking on the initiative, Richard Akpokavie, President of the GOC, said the decision reflects a long-term strategy aimed at enhancing Ghana’s medal prospects at the quadrennial Games. He emphasised that the selections were not handouts but earned through consistent high-level performances and recommendations from coaches.

“Our number one priority is the athletes. How to support them and how can we get them to do what they have to do and so we will do everything to get them to the top. There is only one thing that we ask in return, when we invest in you, you must work,” he said.

Akpokavie also praised the federations for their dedication in preparing athletes to represent Ghana at international competitions. The athletes’ progress will be evaluated through their participation in key tournaments during their European stint.

Kenneth Arthur, President of the Ghana Judo Association, expressed gratitude to the GOC for selecting Oduro, noting it as a show of confidence in both her abilities and the sport. He described both athletes as highly disciplined competitors determined to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games and deliver medals for Ghana.
