In a bold and heart-warming move that’s already sparking excitement across the continent, President John Mahama has announced that Ghana will roll out completely free visas for citizens of all African countries beginning May 25, 2026.

The landmark policy will be launched on Africa Day itself, turning the annual celebration into a real moment of unity and progress.

From that date, anyone travelling from any African nation can simply apply for an e-visa online – and it will cost absolutely nothing.

No more visa fees, no more financial barriers standing in the way of free movement.

President Mahama made the announcement during warm bilateral talks with Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa on the sidelines of an African Union summit.

Speaking with clear pride, he said: “I’m also pleased to announce that effective 25th May 2026, when we commemorate Africa Day, Ghana will commence a free visa regime for all Africans. Africans travelling to Ghana will receive their e-visas online, free of charge.”

He went on to highlight the special relationship Ghana already enjoys with Zimbabwe, noting that the two countries have enjoyed visa-free travel for some time.

“You can travel to each other’s countries without needing a visa. You just hop onto the plane and arrive in each other’s country,” he added with a smile. The new policy is being welcomed as a powerful symbol of pan-African solidarity. For years, many Africans have complained that moving around their own continent is often more difficult and expensive than travelling to Europe or Asia. Ghana’s decision changes that narrative. It removes one of the biggest hurdles – the cost – and makes it easier for families, business people, students, tourists and traders to connect, trade and build relationships across borders.

Importantly, the government has made it clear that this openness comes with responsibility. While the visa fee is being scrapped, security will not be relaxed. President Mahama assured Ghanaians that strong screening systems are already in place. Every applicant will still go through proper checks before travel approval is granted, ensuring the country remains safe while staying welcoming.Ghana is joining a very small and exclusive club.

Right now, only a handful of African nations – Rwanda, Seychelles and The Gambia – offer visa-free access to all Africans. By stepping up on Africa Day, Ghana is positioning itself as a true leader in the push for freer movement and deeper continental integration.

For ordinary Africans, the benefits could be huge. Families separated by distance and cost will find it easier to visit loved ones. Young entrepreneurs and traders will have smoother access to Ghana’s vibrant markets. Students can explore study opportunities without worrying about extra fees. And tourists from across the continent will be encouraged to discover Ghana’s rich culture, beautiful beaches, historic castles and warm hospitality. The timing feels perfect.

With Africa Day approaching, this announcement sends a clear message: Ghana believes in an Africa where borders bring people together rather than keeping them apart. It’s not just about paperwork and stamps – it’s about building trust, boosting economies and strengthening the bonds that tie the continent together.President Mahama’s government has framed the policy as part of a bigger vision of digital reform and easier travel. The online e-visa system will make the process fast, simple and paperless – another step towards modernising how Africa connects with itself.

Reactions have been pouring in since the news broke.

Many Ghanaians are proud that their country is leading by example. Across the rest of Africa, travellers and commentators are celebrating what could become a game-changer for intra-African travel and business.

Of course, the real test will come on May 25 when the system goes live. But for now, the message is loud and clear: Ghana is ready to welcome the whole continent with open arms and zero visa fees.

This is more than just a policy change. It’s a statement of confidence in Africa’s future – a future where movement is freer, opportunities are wider, and the dream of true continental unity feels a little bit closer.Africans, mark your calendars. From May 25, 2026, Ghana is officially saying: “Come as you are – we’ve got your visa ready, and it’s free.”
