Ghana have dramatically sacked their manager Otto Addo, just over two months before the start of this summer’s World Cup.
The decision comes after a tough run of results, including a 2-1 loss to Germany in a friendly on Monday and a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria last Friday.
The Black Stars have now lost their last four matches in a row.Despite boasting talented players like Manchester City’s Antoine Semenyo and Tottenham’s Mohammed Kudus, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations under Addo and have been struggling for form heading into the biggest tournament in football.
The Ghana Football Association confirmed the news shortly after the Germany game, saying they had “parted ways” with the 50-year-old coach with immediate effect.
They added that they will announce the new technical team in due course.Addo, who was born in Germany and spent his entire playing career there, had returned for a second spell in charge of the national team in March 2024. He also represented Ghana 15 times as a player.
The 2026 World Cup kicks off on 11 June in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Ghana, who are drawn in the same group as England, begin their campaign against Panama on 18 June, before facing England on 23 June and Croatia on 27 June. It’s a huge blow for the Black Stars at a critical time, with the tournament now just 72 days away.
