Ghana has openly criticised the United States over a reported military operation in Venezuela that allegedly led to the forceful removal of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
In a strongly worded release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, the Government of Ghana said the incident occurred in the early hours of January 3, 2026, and described it as an action carried out without authorisation and in clear disregard of international norms.
Ghana warned that the use of military force outside the framework of international law threatens the foundations of global order. The government stated that such conduct directly undermines the United Nations Charter and endangers the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of affected nations.
The statement further cautioned that attempts to dominate or occupy another country, or seize control of its natural resources, could trigger far-reaching consequences for international peace and security.
Ghana also expressed alarm over comments reportedly made by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting that the United States would assume control of Venezuela until what he described as a “safe and proper transition” is achieved. The government said remarks about inviting major American oil companies to operate in Venezuela were deeply concerning.
According to Ghana, such statements echo the attitudes of colonial rule and imperial dominance, warning that they risk reopening dangerous chapters in global history.
Reiterating its foreign policy stance, Ghana stressed that Venezuela’s political destiny must be decided by Venezuelans alone, without pressure, interference, or control from external powers.
The government called for an immediate reduction in tensions and demanded the unconditional release of President Maduro and his wife. It also urged the international community to stand firm in defence of international law and respect for national sovereignty.
Ghana concluded by reaffirming its rejection of invasion, occupation, colonialism, apartheid, and all forms of external domination, pledging to consistently oppose any actions that threaten the independence of nations across the world.
