Applications for citizenship by historical diasporans have been temporarily halted by the Ghanaian government as part of efforts to enhance the process
The decision was announced in a joint public notice issued on Sunday, February 1, 2026, by the Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President (DAOOP).
Officials explained that the pause is meant to allow for technical and administrative adjustments aimed at making the application system more efficient and accessible for members of the African diaspora worldwide.
The notice emphasised that the suspension should not be interpreted as a shift in Ghana’s longstanding commitment to welcoming people of African descent seeking a legal and cultural reconnection with the country.
According to the statement, ongoing work between the two institutions is focused on refining procedures to ensure a smoother and more user-friendly experience once applications resume.
Applicants were assured that updated guidelines and revised timelines will be communicated through official platforms in the coming weeks.
The government also expressed appreciation to prospective applicants for their patience and continued interest, adding that the process is expected to reopen shortly. The notice was jointly endorsed by the Ministry of the Interior and the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President.
