Ghana to Preserve Kwame Nkrumah’s Former Residence in Guinea

The Government of Ghana has announced plans to secure, restore, and preserve the former residence of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in Guinea, marking a renewed effort to protect the legacy of the nation’s first President beyond Ghana’s borders.

The initiative is being undertaken at the directive of President John Dramani Mahama and is led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Nkrumah lived in Guinea after he was overthrown in a military coup in 1966 and later served as Co-President alongside Guinea’s founding leader, Ahmed Sékou Touré. He remained in the country until his death in 1972.

According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, discussions are currently underway with the family of the late Sékou Touré to allow Ghana take custodianship of the historic property. The plan is to renovate the abandoned residence and transform it into a preserved heritage site that reflects Nkrumah’s Pan-African vision and final years.

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang recently led a Ghanaian delegation to Guinea, where they met members of the Sékou Touré family and inspected the property following the investiture of President Mamady Doumbouya.

Government officials say the project will strengthen cultural ties between Ghana and Guinea while promoting heritage tourism and historical education. Preservation experts are expected to be engaged as negotiations continue, with assurances that the public will be kept informed throughout the process.
