The Federal Government has announced that several key countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, and France, have officially approved Nigeria’s chosen ambassadors.

This development, shared on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, means Nigeria has now received the green light from 10 countries to send its new envoys. The countries that have already given their consent are:

  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • United States
  • Ireland
  • Qatar
  • Republic of Benin

“Responses from other countries are still being awaited,” the ministry stated.Ebienfa explained that the process of getting approvals from the remaining host countries is still ongoing. Once everything is finalized and cleared by the Presidency, the date for the formal induction ceremony of the new ambassadors will be announced.

Recall that towards the end of 2026, the Presidency sent a list of 65 ambassadorial nominees to the National Assembly for screening. While the nominees were screened in December, their actual deployment still depends on approval from the countries they’re being posted to.However, not all countries have been quick to accept the nominees. Some, like India, have rejected certain candidates, citing the usual diplomatic practice of avoiding new

ambassadors from governments that are close to the end of their term (especially when less than two years remain in office). This approval from major Western and African partners is seen as a positive step in filling Nigeria’s long-vacant diplomatic posts around the world.
