In a rare moment of joy amid years of hardship, a group of toddlers who were rushed out of Gaza as tiny premature babies have finally been reunited with their families.
The children — now around two-and-a-half years old — were among dozens of fragile newborns evacuated from al-Shifa Hospital in November 2023. At the time, heavy fighting had left the hospital without power, putting the babies in incubators at serious risk.
They were taken to Egypt for urgent medical care, along with some caregivers. On Monday (March 30, 2026), 11 of these toddlers returned to Gaza, where emotional scenes unfolded at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.Parents and relatives gathered with tears, hugs, and cheers as they finally held their children — many meeting them properly for the first time since they were just days or weeks old.
For some families, it had been more than two years of painful separation. While the reunions brought huge relief and happiness, many parents also expressed worry about what the future holds for their little ones in a Gaza Strip that has been deeply changed by the long conflict. The return was made possible with help from UNICEF and coordination involving Israeli authorities. It stands as one of the more hopeful stories to come out of the region in a very long time — tiny survivors finally coming back home.
